Tuesday In-Class Exercise

As you know from class, a lot of today is about getting your rough draft written.  You have the "building blocks" exercise to complete with your writing time; in addition, I would like you to post to the blog by 9 pm.  Please respond to the following questions.

1.  Which two pieces are you using for your essay?
2.  Why did you choose these two?

The week ahead: a preview

As we are at the start of our third week, with a rough draft on the horizon, I wanted to take a moment to go over what we will cover this week, and the plan of action.

For Tuesday: We will discuss the readings (see the link in the previous post), and summarize each; we will break down the major components of this specific kind of paper; we will discuss good ideas for introductions and conclusions; we will discuss two sample papers; you will complete a "building block" exercise independently, and then post a response to the blog.
 For Thursday: Please bring two copies of your rough draft for workshop.  In addition to workshop, we will complete an editing exercise to hone our skills a bit before diving in.

Both days this week have in-class independent work built into the schedule--I know we have a lot of writing to do in a short time frame, so wanted to set us up for thorough writing, and successful essays.

See you tomorrow!

New Readings for Tuesday

As discussed in class, here are the remaining readings for our Compare/Contrast Unit.  Please read them all for Tuesday, and write a (single) reading response.

Also, please print these and bring them (along with the previous two readings) to class on Tuesday.

And finally, please come to class with a general idea of which two essays you will focus on for your paper.

Thanks!

TO DOWNLOAD THE READINGS, please go here:

Writing Assessment

Any time we write, it is important to take stock, consider what we've done, and how it has affected the work.  Now, as you are on the cusp of finishing the first essay, we have a great opportunity to do just that.

I am giving you class time to do this, as opposed to writing it in the classroom, so you are free to do it at any point before the final draft is turned in.  So, you must respond to this (in the comments below) no later than Thursday at noon.

Thanks!

In the comments sections, please respond to the these prompts:

1.  What is your name?
2.  Why did you pick the event for the your paper?  What drew you to that particular event?
3.  What do you think you did well with this paper?  Why?
4.  What might you need to/want to work on for the next paper?  Why?

Remember for Tuesday

I hope you all had a nice weekend!  Just a reminder:

Please bring two copies of your rough draft to class tomorrow.  The vast majority of our session will be used for workshop (reading each other's work, commenting, etc.), so please be ready to dive in and help each other out!

Tonight (Thursday) In-Class Assignment

In class today, we discussed...

*  The readings

*  The details and requirements for the Personal Narrative essay

*  Tips for Writing

And, we completed...

*  Some "building blocks" for the essay itself

Near the end of class, we discussed how to possibly start an essay of this nature, to pull in readers.  Now, with the remaining time in class, I would like you to "dive in," and write your first paragraph.  You are not "legally obligated" to use this paragraph; it is just a way to start the writing process.

In the "comments" section on this post, please write your name and the first paragraph by 9 pm this evening.  This counts as "in class" work, so please be sure to post by the deadline!

Grammar Exercises

As mentioned in class, I would like you to try each of these grammar exercises, which represent the most common Writing 1 errors.  Complete them, and check your answers (all available through the site).  On any exercises where you don't do well, be sure to use The Writer's Reference to research the topic, and be sure you are clear on it for future use.
